Pain Management for Healthcare Workers

The intention of this program is to provide the patient with the sense that they are controlling their disease rather than the disease controlling their life.

The bad news is that more than 50 million americans are partially or fully disabled by chronic pain.  And pain costs employers $80 billion annually.

The good news is that the brain controls over 3000 chemicals in the body.  Among them are endorphins, serotonins, and melatonins, which are affected by the subconscious.

In 2000, the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) established standards for the assessment of pain.  The standard also specifically states that alternative, non-pharmacological methods for pain management are to be used by all hospitals as part of their accreditation.

     The class will teach:

  •      Appropriate language when working with pain patients.
  •      Hypnotic techniques to create a mind/body response to relieve pain
  •      Differences between chronic and acute pain
  •      Specific methods of pain control
  •      Hypnosis relaxation techniques, as well as discussion of EFT and NLP
  •               (emotional freedom technique and neurolinguistic programming)
  •      Hypnosis used as a coping skill when working with secondary gain
  •      Reason for use of hypnosis with emphasis on the clinical practice of hypnosis involving
  •                a physician's referral.
