Yoga

Yoga means "union" the union of your mind, body and spirit.  It is one of the oldest known ways to maintain your health.  Yoga does this with breath work, poses, imagery, and progressive relaxation.  Yoga works by staying in the present moment, also called mindfulness.  It is a wonderful practice to prevent and manage stress-related chronic health problems.  The research on yoga and mindfulness meditation indicates the following potential health benefits:

  • Reduction in blood pressure [Yale studies found yoga to be so powerful in reducing blood pressure that it is comparable to some medications.  It reduced systolic blood pressure 19 points and diastolic 13 pts].
  • Decreased breathing and heart rate.
  • Pain reduction [Mayo studied yoga and found it to be particularly effective for lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis.  Jon Kabat-Zinn studies in the area of pain related drug utilization decreased as activity and self-esteem increased].
  • Reduction in Anxiety and Depression [Harvard, Mayo, and Zinn studies all found that one hour of Yoga leads to a 27% boost in the brain's level of GABA, a neurotransmitter that enhances mood and eases anxiety].
